Detailed Itinerary

1

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Telouet – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura

Drive: ~5–6 hours
Depart Marrakech in the morning around 8:30 a.m. in your private air-conditioned vehicle, climbing into the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m / 7,415 ft). Take in sweeping panoramas of terraced Amazigh (Berber) villages clinging to mountain slopes and rugged valleys before descending toward the Ounila Valley.

Telouet Kasbah

Take a scenic detour into the Ounila Valley to visit Telouet Kasbah, the ancestral seat of the powerful Glaoui clan who controlled the southern trans-Saharan caravan routes. Please note: The interior of Telouet Kasbah is closed because of damage caused by the September 2023 earthquake, but you can explore the impressive earthen exterior and surrounding village with a local guide while learning about its fascinating history.

Ait Ben Haddou

Continue through the striking red-earth landscapes of the Ounila Valley to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Morocco’s most iconic fortified earthen village (ksar). Explore the labyrinthine alleys, historic granary, and adobe towers that have served as the dramatic backdrop for international films including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones.

Ouarzazate & Skoura

Continue past Ouarzazate, Morocco’s cinema capital, and drive along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the lush Skoura palm grove. Arrive at your authentic kasbah accommodation nestled within the tranquil oasis, where you will enjoy dinner and a restful first night.
Accommodation: Authentic Kasbah / Riad in Skoura

Day 2: Skoura – Kasbah Amredhil – Valley of Roses – Dades Gorge

Drive: ~3–4 hours
Begin the day exploring the Skoura oasis and its centuries-old earthen fortifications before continuing eastward through the fragrant Valley of Roses and ascending into the dramatic canyons of the Dades Valley.

Valley of Roses

Explore the historical Kasbah Amredhil in Skoura, a 17th-century masterpiece of earthen architecture featured on the Moroccan 50-dirham banknote. Continue to Kelaat M’gouna in the Valley of Roses, famous for its annual spring rose harvest and artisanal distillation of Damascena rose water, cosmetic oils, and perfumes.

Dades Gorge

Drive up into the Dades Gorge, passing the bizarre "Monkey Fingers" (Cliffs of Tamlalt) rock formations and ascending the iconic Tisdrine hairpin switchbacks. Check in to your boutique hotel or riad perched along the canyon edge, with time to take a gentle walk along the river valley before dinner.

Day 3: Dades Gorge – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Tinjdad – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga

Drive: ~4–5 hours
Travel from the Dades Valley toward the Sahara Desert, stopping to marvel at the sheer limestone cliffs of Todra Gorge and passing ancient underground irrigation systems before arriving at the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Todra Gorge

Stop in the oasis town of Tinghir and venture into Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-high sheer vertical limestone cliffs narrow to just 10 meters apart, with a crystal-clear mountain stream running through the canyon floor. Enjoy a leisurely walk beneath the towering rock walls.

Erfoud & Rissani

Continue through the desert towns of Tinjdad and Erfoud, renowned for ancient marine fossil quarries and fossil artisan workshops. Pass through Rissani, the historic desert trading hub and cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, before reaching the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field near Merzouga.

Camel Trek in Merzouga

Meet your camel guide at the edge of the desert and embark on an approximately 45-minute to 1-hour camel ride across the golden sands of Erg Chebbi as the sun sets over the dunes (4×4 camp transfer is also available for guests who prefer not to ride camels). Arrive at your luxury desert camp, where you will be welcomed with traditional mint tea and Moroccan pastries, settle into your private tent with en-suite bathroom and hot water shower, enjoy a freshly prepared multi-course dinner, and gather around the campfire for traditional Berber drumming under the starlit Saharan sky.

Day 4: Full Day in Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Drive: Flexible / Local desert exploration
Spend a full, immersive day in the Sahara Desert. Wake early to witness the spectacular desert sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, followed by a hearty breakfast at camp. Today you have the choice between two distinct desert experiences:

Option 1: Full-Day Camel Trekking

Embark on a full-day camel trek deep into the Erg Chebbi dune sea with your experienced desert guide. Ride for approximately 3 hours in the morning through remote dune ridges, pause for a freshly prepared picnic lunch served in the shade of desert tamarisks in the heart of the dunes, and ride for approximately 3 hours in the afternoon back to the luxury camp. (Seasonal note: Weather conditions between May and the end of September may require an alternative to full-day trekking in the dunes due to daytime heat).

Option 2: Merzouga 4×4 Desert Exploration

Embark on a guided 4×4 excursion around the Erg Chebbi perimeter, visiting nomad families living in traditional tent settlements, exploring the abandoned French mining village of M’Fis, and discovering seasonal desert wildlife before visiting Khamlia and Rissani.

Khamlia Village

Visit the village of Khamlia, home to the descendants of formerly enslaved sub-Saharan Africans, to experience live spiritual Gnawa music performances featuring castanets (qraqeb) and the three-stringed lute (guembri).

Rissani

Explore the traditional desert market of Rissani, the historic starting point of the trans-Saharan salt-and-gold caravans. Wander the vibrant souks selling dates, spices, handmade leather crafts, and livestock (souk days are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). In the late afternoon, return to your luxury camp for sandboarding on the high dunes, a gourmet dinner, and stargazing.
Accommodation: Luxury Desert Camp in Erg Chebbi (Second Night)
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

Drive: ~7 hours (~460 km / 285 miles)
Depart the Sahara Desert after breakfast and journey northward across diverse Moroccan landscapes, transitioning from desert oases and rocky plateaus to the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and arriving in Fes by late afternoon or early evening.

Rissani & Erfoud

Travel past Rissani and Erfoud, leaving the pre-Saharan plains and entering the scenic gorge of the Ziz River.

Ziz Valley

Drive alongside the immense Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s largest date palm oases, stopping at panoramic viewpoints overlooking the winding river and thousands of lush palm trees framed by towering red canyon cliffs.

Midelt

Cross the High Atlas transition zones and the Col du Zad pass to reach Midelt, nestled between the High and Middle Atlas ranges, known for its apple orchards and mineral mining heritage. Stop here for a relaxing lunch.

Azrou Cedar Forest

Ascend into the Middle Atlas Mountains to the ancient cedar forest of Azrou (Gourraud Forest), home to wild Barbary macaques living among giant Atlantic cedar trees. Stop to observe and photograph the monkeys in their natural woodland habitat.

Ifrane & Fes

Pass through Ifrane, nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco" for its alpine-style chalets, clean tree-lined streets, and winter ski slopes. Continue descending through the fertile Saïss plains to the imperial city of Fes, where your driver drops you off directly at your hotel or riad, concluding your 5-day desert expedition.
